The word Bocksbeutel refers to the unique wide rounded shape of the bottle. The Celts used similarly shaped bottles circa 1400 B.C. The first record of a Bocksbeutal bottle used for wine is the stone relief found in the Juliussspitals winery circa 1576. Today, the bottle is a symbol of high quality wine from Germany&#8217;s Franken region (that includes Rothenburg).
