Note. The word Bocksbeutel refers to the unique wide rounded shape of the bottle. The Celts used similarly shaped bottles circa 1400 B.C. The first record of a Bocksbeutal bottle used for wine is the stone relief found in the Juliussspitals winery circa 1576. Today, the bottle is a symbol of high quality wine from Germany’s Franken region (that includes Rothenburg). Since 1989 the bottle shape is protected and may only be used by wineries in the Franken region plus a very few others with traditional ties to the shape.
